McDonald’s McNugget commercial… Singing it’s Way to My Pocket

November 30, 2008 · 8 Comments

This is a short post. McDonald’s has a habit of featuring Black Americans in its commercials. A loong time ago they even had an ad proclaiming how they were uplifting the Black community with its employment opportunities (Dave Chappelle has an excellent spoof of this in a Season 1 sketch; if anyone can find the actual original commercial, let me know).

Now things have gotten a bit out of hand.  McDonald’s straight up has an R&B artist crooning for mcnuggets.  And no, it’s not coincidence that the word crooning is just one letter off from cooning.

I’ve heard the idea tossed around that Black people are actually just oversensitive when it comes to Black people portrayed in the media.  Possibly.  But you know… when you’ve been burned so many times and made into a blackface mammy and/or pickinini time and time again (or a friggin California Raisin!!), you kinda want to make sure that you stop getting the shaft in 2008.  I don’t think McDonald’s got the memo.  Enjoy:

McDonald’s, in all its urban-marketed splendor, can hold my pocket.

You got a 10 piece guuurrlll please don’t be stin-gay! I can only shake my head in disgust. We’ve gone miles forward with the election of Barak Obama and we’ve set ourselves back AGAIN with an extra value meal. As much as I’d like to blame McDonald’s for convincing “Calvin” to forfeit college and be a cashier, for making a commercial with the cooning crooner, or for putting a franchise on every corner so the current and next generation of black people are destined to suffer from obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, and blood pressure problems because they can’t say no when asked to super-size, we have to start taking responsibility for what we chose to allow. If we, as black people, were more selective in the roles we took and the food we ate, then perhaps, there would be no shucking and jiving for nuggets because no one would be so desperate to even take the part.

Whenever I see this I laugh because I cannot believe it’s a real commercial. It feels like something that should be on MadTV…smh.

That friggin commercial cracks me up EVERY TIME.

I LAUGH AND LAUGH AND LAUGH.

When I saw her creeping with the McDonald’s bag the first time, I absolutely lost it. Laughed for 20 minutes straight.

In perspective, they also have the other outrageous McNuggets commercials featuring non-black people: the couples’ wedding where all the catering (including the cake) is made of nuggets, and one with a dude who’s a supposed rock star throwing a party or something.

I’m going to go click the link again before I go to bed just to get a nightcap laugh.

Are you serious right now? I love this commercial! I thought it was a Joe video. Damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

Remember how Tyrese started? He was an unknown and sang that Coca Cola commercial with headphones on while boarding a city bus. I love that commercial and I love this one too.

    AWG:

no are YOU serious? There’s a difference between singing and cooning. If Tyrese was on the bus singing a love ballad to coke along the lines of “oooooh, gimme dat sweet sweet bubblay!!! You knooooow I needs dat bubblay!!” would you still love the commercial so much?

Clearly there’s a thin line between Black people using their talent and Black people being used for their talent. “Girl don’t be sting-ay” is definitively the latter.

I dunno…this commercial is quite funny to me. I have found/seen/heard WAY more offensive stuff than the McDonald’s commercial (ie, bossip.com, some of our “commedians”).

P.S. to everyone who is hitting that note about her being STINNNGAAAY…too funny!!!
